Eight-year-old Lola Fenn from Bedale Primary School wins a competition to create a new sausage flavour, with her Lemon & Honey Chicken Sausage set to be sold online by leading food company Heck!

Local Student’s Sausage Recipe Set to Hit Supermarket Shelves

Bedale, North Yorkshire – A talented young student’s culinary creativity has captured the attention of leading food company Heck! Eight-year-old Lola Fenn, a pupil at Bedale Primary School, has emerged victorious in a unique competition organised by the local banger and burger firm to discover their next innovative sausage flavour.

Heck!, well-known for its healthier, gluten-free chicken sausages that appeal to slimmers, gym enthusiasts, and health-conscious eaters, usually relies on their ‘sausage scientist’ Calum Smith to develop new flavours in the kitchen. However, for a change, the company challenged pupils from a local primary school to contribute their ideas.

The competition, which promised that the winning recipe would be brought to life at Heck’s headquarters and sold on the company’s website, saw numerous impressive entries. Lola’s Lemon & Honey Chicken Sausage recipe stood out, with the judges, including Heck! co-founders Jamie, Andrew, and Debbie Keeble, particularly impressed by her thoughtful and clever ingredient combination. Consequently, a special packaging designed in Lola’s name has been created.

Mel Drummond, an employee at Heck!, who is also a parent at Bedale Primary School, conceived the idea for the contest. After discussing it with her bosses, the plan was set in motion. Drummond’s initiative aimed to engage young minds in food and farming, igniting creativity and interest in the culinary arts.

Commenting on her win, Lola shared, “It was really good fun coming up with ideas. I came up with a few different flavour combinations but decided to go with the lemon and honey. It’s exciting to think my sausages will be sold on the website and I think the pack looks really great too. I hope everyone enjoys them.”

Heck! is currently in discussions with major supermarkets to roll out the new flavour nationwide. There are also plans for Lola and her fellow pupils to enjoy a bespoke lunch featuring the special sausage flavour when they return to school after the summer holidays.

Jamie Keeble expressed the company’s enthusiasm about engaging younger generations in food innovation, saying, “We’re passionate about getting young people interested in food and farming, and this competition has really ignited the imaginations of budding young sausage makers. We loved Lola’s lemon and honey combination that works very well with the chicken. It’s a sweet and subtle flavour that’s perfect for summer and we’re excited for it to launch later this month.”

He also extended his gratitude to Bedale Primary School, stating, “We’d like to say a big thank you to all the amazing staff and pupils at Bedale Primary for a very memorable visit and we look forward to any more brilliant ideas they come up with!”

The Lemon & Honey Chicken Sausage, a limited-edition product, will be available for purchase from 26 July for two weeks on Heck’s official website, www.heckfood.co.uk.
