A new study indicates that replacing saturated animal-derived fats, such as dairy butter, with unsaturated oils from olives and nuts improves heart health. Published in Nature Medicine, this research involved international scientists, including Clemens Wittenbecher from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The study utilized lipidomics—analyzing fats in the blood—and found that dietary changes significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. This supports existing recommendations from organizations like WHO for more plant-based diets. The findings highlight the potential health benefits of diets rich in unsaturated plant fats like the Mediterranean diet.
