Business Insider is moving rapidly to embed artificial intelligence into its newsroom operations, launching a dedicated “Business AI” byline for stories produced with machine assistance and human editing. The shift aligns with parent company Axel Springer’s plan to make AI central to all its news brands.

AI tools are now authorised across Business Insider for drafting, transcription, research, data analysis and fact-checking. All AI-produced material will be reviewed by editors responsible for ensuring accuracy and fairness. “AI is a tool to enhance, not replace, journalism,” the company said, stressing that reporters remain accountable for the quality and originality of their work.

The move follows Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner’s internal directive urging employees to use AI routinely, comparing its impact to the dawn of the internet. Döpfner acknowledged that errors will occur but said transparency and swift correction are key to building trust in the technology.

Beyond editorial work, Business Insider is already deploying AI for automated products such as search and audio briefings, with fully AI-generated items clearly labelled. The company says it will adapt policies as technologies and regulations evolve.

The acceleration comes amid financial and strategic restructuring. Business Insider recently cut 21% of its staff, citing falling traffic and a pivot towards generative AI to improve productivity. CEO Barbara Peng said the company’s focus is shifting to higher-engagement journalism and live events through its new BI Live division, while winding down its commerce business.

Across Axel Springer’s portfolio, other titles are experimenting cautiously. Insider has formed a working group to draft rules for AI use, emphasising human oversight to prevent misinformation.
