The Irish Times Group has appointed Garry Moroney, a tech entrepreneur with global experience, as its new chief executive.

Moroney will succeed interim CEO Michael Sheehan on December 1. Sheehan will return to his role as Group CFO in January.

Moroney brings long experience in building and scaling tech businesses. He founded two Irish software firms, Clavis Insight and Similarity Systems, guiding both from early-stage growth through to acquisition by major global companies. Earlier in his career he worked as a management consultant with McKinsey. He holds an MBA from Trinity College Dublin and an engineering degree from University College Cork.

Shay Garvey, Chair of the Board, said Moroney’s background in digital-focused companies will help the group realise its ambitions. The company says it intends to maintain its emphasis on independent journalism across its portfolio.

The Irish Times Group includes the Irish Times, the Irish Examiner, BreakingNews.ie, MyHome.ie, RIP.ie, The Gloss, ScorBeo and several regional newspapers such as the Western People, Roscommon Herald and Waterford News & Star. It also holds a majority stake in WLR FM.

Moroney most recently served as CEO of Roomex, a corporate travel management platform. He was named The Irish Times Business Person of the Month in December 2018.

His appointment follows a period of acquisitions and expansion for the group and comes after the departure of former chief executive Deirdre Veldon in September. Industry observers say his mix of tech expertise and commitment to strong journalism positions him to steer the organisation through further digital change.
