Puck has finalised its acquisition of Air Mail, the upscale weekly newsletter founded by former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter and Alessandra Stanley, in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at about $16 million.

The deal brings together two subscription-first brands targeting affluent, culturally attuned audiences. Air Mail, launched in 2019 after Carter’s departure from Vanity Fair, built a reputation for high-end travel, culture and society coverage. Puck, founded in 2021 by Kelly, has been carving a space in digital journalism by assembling high-profile writers and leveraging newsletters with premium subscriber business models.

In a joint statement, the companies said the acquisition will “unite Air Mail’s distinctive journalism, stable of luxury advertisers and sophisticated commerce platforms with Puck’s portfolio of venerated journalists, scale and proven subscriber engagement model.”

For Puck, the acquisition represents a strategic opportunity to extend both its audience and advertiser base into the luxury, lifestyle and travel milieu that Air Mail already occupies. For Air Mail, the deal offers access to more scale, infrastructure and an enlarged subscriber ecosystem.

The move also underscores the broader trend of consolidation in the subscription-newsletter business, where niche publishers are seeking both growth and efficiency amid rising competition and the challenge of monetising audience engagement.

Insiders note a personal dimension: Kelly once worked under Carter at Vanity Fair, so the merger carries a symbolic passing of the baton between mentor and protégé. As part of the deal, Carter is stepping away from his title, opening a new chapter for the Air Mail brand under Puck’s ownership.

The acquisition is scheduled to complete later this year, subject to customary closing procedures.
