Russian Disinformation Campaign Targets Armenian Prime Minister Ahead of Elections
A sophisticated disinformation operation linked to the Kremlin has launched a coordinated smear campaign against Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, according to an investigation by The Insider, which cited findings from the Bot Blocker Project.
The campaign, attributed to the Matryoshka network, comes as Armenia prepares for parliamentary elections in June 2026. Security analysts have identified a pattern of coordinated bot activity across multiple social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter) and the emerging platform BlueSky.
These accounts have been disseminating fabricated videos designed to mimic Western media productions. The content falsely accuses Pashinyan of undermining Armenia’s cultural heritage and promoting what they characterize as foreign liberal values that allegedly threaten traditional Armenian society.
Central to the disinformation narrative is criticism of Pashinyan’s proposed “Fourth Republic” initiative. This political reform package includes several significant changes: drafting a new constitution through a national referendum, formally relinquishing Armenia’s territorial claims to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region (also known as Artsakh), and accelerating Armenia’s integration with the European Union.
The campaign has taken a particularly disturbing turn with the circulation of AI-manipulated images depicting the Armenian leader in humiliating scenarios alongside regional and global political figures. One doctored image shows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan forcing Pashinyan to kneel, while another portrays the Armenian Prime Minister picking up garbage outside the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump nearby. Additional manipulated content shows Pashinyan in demeaning positions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
This disinformation effort comes at a delicate time for Armenian politics and regional relations. Following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and subsequent Azerbaijan military operation in 2023 that resulted in the exodus of ethnic Armenians from the region, Armenia’s relationship with its neighbors and its geopolitical orientation have become increasingly contentious domestic issues.
Pashinyan, who came to power following the 2018 “Velvet Revolution,” has faced growing criticism from opposition groups and former allies who view his diplomatic approach toward Azerbaijan and Turkey as capitulation. His government’s pivot toward closer ties with the European Union and the United States has also complicated Armenia’s historically strong relationship with Russia.
The Matryoshka network, identified by multiple intelligence agencies as a Russian-backed operation, has previously been implicated in disinformation campaigns targeting Western democracies and former Soviet states pursuing closer integration with Euro-Atlantic institutions.
Digital security experts note that this campaign demonstrates increasing sophistication in Russia’s information warfare tactics, particularly in its use of AI-generated content and coordination across multiple platforms to evade detection and content moderation.
“What makes this operation particularly concerning is how it blends traditional disinformation tactics with newer technologies like AI-manipulated images,” said a cybersecurity analyst who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of their work. “The goal appears to be undermining Pashinyan’s legitimacy while stoking nationalist sentiment against his government’s reform agenda.”
Armenian government officials have yet to comment publicly on these specific allegations, though Pashinyan has previously warned about foreign interference in Armenian politics, particularly from actors seeking to maintain Russian influence in the South Caucasus region.
As Armenia continues its complex balancing act between major powers while recovering from recent conflicts, the spread of targeted disinformation presents yet another challenge to the country’s democratic development and regional stability.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
