Sumud Flotilla Encounters Attacks, Sabotage Amid Media Controversy

Israeli forces have intensified efforts to disrupt the Global Sumud Flotilla’s mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to the Turkish delegation’s coordinator.

Hussein Durmaz, who coordinates the Turkish contingent within the flotilla, revealed that Israel has been working through third countries to derail the humanitarian convoy’s progress toward Gaza. Speaking to Anadolu news agency, Durmaz detailed how the Israeli regime has employed various tactics, including diplomatic pressure, sabotage, and media manipulation.

“Israel offered arrangements through third countries,” Durmaz explained. “The proposals suggested: ‘You have reached your goal — let us deliver these humanitarian supplies to Gaza via Cyprus, under the guarantees of the Vatican or the United Nations.'” According to Durmaz, such offers came through high-level Italian diplomatic channels, including both Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella.

The flotilla coordinator interpreted these offers as strategic attempts to neutralize the convoy’s mission and diminish its influence. “These were in fact attempts to block the flotilla and break its influence,” he stated firmly.

Physical sabotage has accompanied the diplomatic maneuvering, with Durmaz reporting that several vessels have been rendered inoperable through deliberate damage. More alarmingly, he noted that areas where the flotilla’s ships were docked had been targeted by “more than 20 drones and sonic bombs” during their preparation phase.

The Israeli campaign extends beyond physical interference to what Durmaz describes as systematic media manipulation. “Israel systematically attempts almost daily to weaken this process and uses various terrorism accusations to manipulate the media, portraying it as a ‘Hamas flotilla,'” he explained. This characterization appears designed to delegitimize the humanitarian mission by associating it with a group designated as a terrorist organization by Israel and several Western nations.

Despite these challenges, Durmaz insisted that the flotilla’s resolve remains unshaken. “There has been no reduction in the size of our flotilla nor any change in our determination,” he affirmed, though he acknowledged that the mission has entered a critical phase where more intense Israeli interference may be forthcoming.

The Global Sumud Flotilla represents a significant international effort to break the tight restrictions on humanitarian aid reaching Gaza, where the United Nations and multiple humanitarian organizations have reported catastrophic conditions. The term “sumud” carries particular significance, as it translates from Arabic to mean “steadfastness” or “resilience” – a concept deeply embedded in Palestinian identity and resistance to occupation.

Durmaz emphasized that the flotilla’s fundamental mission goes beyond the immediate delivery of aid. “The aim of the Sumud Flotilla is to open an unconditional humanitarian corridor for the people of Gaza, together with humanitarian and medical supplies,” he stated.

The coordinator rejected what he characterized as deceptive approaches from Israel. “We know what is happening in Gaza is genocide, violence, and oppression. We know that approaches such as ‘bring two aid ships and we will deliver them’ are deceptive,” he said, referring to proposals that would allow Israel to maintain complete control over aid distribution.

The flotilla’s mission comes amid international concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where more than a year of intense conflict has devastated infrastructure, medical facilities, and food security. International aid organizations have consistently reported severe shortages of essential supplies, including medicine, food, and clean water.

“Everyone should be able to deliver their aid to Gaza without needing permission, and that is the fundamental mission of the Sumud Flotilla,” Durmaz concluded, highlighting the convoy’s commitment to establishing direct humanitarian access to the besieged territory.
