Viral Claim of Secret Priest-Nun Marriage Debunked

A viral story claiming a Catholic priest and nun secretly married after falling in love has been thoroughly debunked, revealing a case of sensationalized reporting that distorted the facts of a legitimate Catholic couple’s journey.

The New York Post recently published a misleading article about Laís and Jackson Dognini, falsely reporting that “a glamorous nun has married a Catholic priest after they fell in love while praying together.” The story gained significant traction online, but critical details were misrepresented.

Laís Dognini, now an Instagram influencer, took to social media on October 9 to correct the record, explaining that neither she nor her husband had taken final religious vows before their marriage. She had been a Carmelite novice but never became a fully professed nun, while Jackson was a seminarian who never reached priestly ordination.

“We hadn’t had any contact; we even lived in different states. It was only after [leaving religious formation] that we started dating, so there were no scandals,” Laís clarified in her post. “We love being Catholic, we admire all vocations, and today we serve God through marriage.”

The couple’s actual story represents a common and accepted path within Catholicism. Both individuals properly discerned their vocations, with Laís spending two years in Carmelite formation and Jackson spending five years in seminary before each determined religious life wasn’t their calling.

According to Laís’s June 2025 Instagram post detailing their relationship, the couple had known each other for over six years but had minimal interaction during their religious formation. Their relationship only began after both had independently left religious life.

“He wanted to be a priest and went to the seminary; I wanted to be a nun and went to the convent,” she explained. After leaving religious life, they reconnected, began dating, and eventually married—a process that, while brief by some standards, reflected their mature discernment.

The false narrative of a “secret marriage” particularly irked the couple. Laís noted that many of her followers weren’t even aware of her previous religious discernment until she shared their story publicly, contradicting the idea of any secrecy or scandal.

This incident highlights a recurring pattern in mainstream media coverage of Catholic religious life, where normal processes of vocational discernment are often sensationalized. The Catholic Church has established formation periods specifically to allow individuals to determine if religious life is their true calling before taking permanent vows.

Experts in religious vocations note that it’s not uncommon for men and women to spend time in formation before discerning a different path. What made this case newsworthy was merely that both individuals had previously considered religious life before finding each other.

The misrepresentation underscores the importance of media literacy when consuming stories about religious practices, particularly when headlines appear designed to suggest impropriety or scandal where none exists.

For their part, the Dogninis have embraced their vocation to marriage, with Laís noting that they “serve God through marriage” after properly discerning out of their previous paths—a process fully in line with Catholic teaching and practice.
