{"id":12927,"date":"2026-06-24T02:14:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T02:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sawahsolutions.com\/range\/senate-joins-house-in-rebuke-of-trump-over-his-war-in-iran\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T02:14:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T02:14:12","slug":"senate-joins-house-in-rebuke-of-trump-over-his-war-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sawahsolutions.com\/range\/senate-joins-house-in-rebuke-of-trump-over-his-war-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate joins House in rebuke of Trump over his war in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Republican-led U.S. Senate served up a rare public check on President Donald Trump\u2019s agenda Tuesday when it voted to approve a House-passed War Powers Resolution to end hostilities in Iran.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"2\" dir=\"ltr\">Senate approval marked the first time both chambers\u00a0have agreed\u00a0in a rebuke of Trump over his war in Iran.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"4\" dir=\"ltr\">The concurrent resolution, which passed\u00a050-48,\u00a0does not require the president\u2019s signature and its enforceability has been a perennial topic of\u00a0debate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"7\" dir=\"ltr\">The Senate\u2019s approval occurred against the backdrop of the administration\u2019s peace deal\u00a0negotiations\u00a0with Iran, which have been criticized from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"9\" dir=\"ltr\">Four Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the measure: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska; Rand Paul of Kentucky; Louisiana\u2019s Bill Cassidy, who recently lost his primary race after Trump endorsed an opponent; and Susan Collins, who\u2019s fighting a tough reelection campaign in Maine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"10\" dir=\"ltr\">Democrat John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted no. Paul and Fetterman have broken ranks with their parties on several\u00a0previous\u00a0Iran War Powers Resolution votes.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"12\" dir=\"ltr\">Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who was recently hospitalized, and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania did not vote. McCormick was with Trump on a trip to Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<h4 data-reader-unique-id=\"13\">Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, argue that War Powers Resolutions are not constitutional.\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"15\" dir=\"ltr\">The U.S. Supreme Court in 1983 ruled against the validity of congressional measures that do not require a president\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"16\" dir=\"ltr\">Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Congress \u201cstood up to Donald Trump and voted to end his costly, unnecessary, and devastating war with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"17\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cLet me be clear: for the first time, this resolution has passed both chambers of Congress and does not require the President\u2019s signature. The message from the only branch of government with the power to declare war is unmistakable: the Trump administration must withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities in Iran. The pressure on Republicans mounts,\u201d Schumer said in a statement following the vote.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"18\" dir=\"ltr\">Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who sponsored the original resolution that passed the House on June 3, said the measure is binding and the president \u201cmust cease all hostilities against Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"19\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cRegardless of what President Trump says, this measure is binding under the War Powers Resolution, and I will explore all legal avenues to ensure the Executive complies with the will of Congress. Congress never authorized this failed war, and the president certainly has no authority to continue it indefinitely without our consent as the Constitution demands,\u201d Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"20\" dir=\"ltr\">The White House declined to comment on the vote.<\/p>\n<h4 data-reader-unique-id=\"21\">Negotiations continue<\/h4>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"22\" dir=\"ltr\">Administration officials, who maintain hostilities ended in early April, are on a 60-day clock to hammer out a final agreement with Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"23\" dir=\"ltr\">As part of a temporary memorandum of understanding in effect during talks, the administration\u00a0lifted\u00a0its naval blockade of Iranian ports and economic sanctions on Iranian oil, allowing the Islamic Republic to now sell on the global market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"25\" dir=\"ltr\">The interim deal also charges Iran with demining the Strait of Hormuz and allowing tankers and cargo ships to travel unimpeded while Iran and Oman create a scheme for passage through the narrow shipping route where one-fifth of the world\u2019s petroleum traveled prior to the war.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"26\" dir=\"ltr\">Trump issued social media\u00a0threats\u00a0to Iran over the weekend as Iran\u2019s new Persian Gulf Strait Authority continued to impose certain\u00a0requirements\u00a0for ships to pass.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"29\" dir=\"ltr\">Thirteen American service members died in the war launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28, and over 400 have been injured,\u00a0according\u00a0to the Pentagon.
