{"id":12062,"date":"2026-06-01T21:55:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T21:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sawahsolutions.com\/range\/ready-fire-aim-pentagon-cut-workforce-with-little-analysis-before-or-since-gao-finds\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T21:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T21:55:15","slug":"ready-fire-aim-pentagon-cut-workforce-with-little-analysis-before-or-since-gao-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sawahsolutions.com\/range\/ready-fire-aim-pentagon-cut-workforce-with-little-analysis-before-or-since-gao-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Ready, fire, aim: Pentagon cut workforce with little analysis before or since, GAO finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Pentagon leaders cut their department\u2019s workforce by more than 10 percent with little regard for the effects\u2014and still has no plans to assess them, according to a congressional watchdog report released on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The department shed 78,000 civilian employees in 2025 through a mix of voluntary resignations, involuntary layoffs, and a hiring freeze that resulted in nearly 60,000 fewer new hires than in recent years, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we found that DOD didn\u2019t consistently analyze the impacts of these reductions, either in 2025 or in prior years,\u201d according to the report. \u201cDOD also doesn\u2019t have a plan to assess lessons learned from its 2025 workforce reductions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In their response to the report, Defense officials agreed that they should \u201cdevelop and implement a plan for collecting and sharing lessons learned from the Department&#8217;s implementation of workforce reduction efforts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The officials did not indicate whether that would happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soon after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took office, the Pentagon announced it would cut 5 to 8 percent of its civilian workforce. Within a year, the number swelled to about 110,000\u2014about 14 percent of DOD civilians\u2014including laid-off probationary employees, deferred resignations, and voluntary early retirements.
