OneThird introduces its advanced avocado scanner in Paris, revolutionising how retailers manage fresh produce by assessing fruit ripeness and reducing waste.
OneThird, an innovative start-up focused on reducing waste in the fresh produce sector, is set to unveil its new avocado scanner at the upcoming European retail event, Tech for Retail, scheduled for November 26th and 27th at Porte de Versailles in Paris. This marks OneThird’s inaugural entry into the French market, facilitated through a newly formed partnership with Ida, a company that leverages artificial intelligence for supply optimisation.
The avocado scanner operates using infrared light technology to assess the ripeness of avocados. By employing advanced spectral analysis combined with sophisticated algorithms, the device provides real-time data on the fruit’s shelf life. This information is vital for retailers as it allows them to make informed decisions about inventory management and ordering processes.
Mateo Beacco, co-founder and CEO of Ida, highlighted the importance of shelf life in developing algorithms for French retailers, stating, “Being able to integrate the data generated by OneThird’s technology directly into our tools is a revolution for a sector that has never been able to accurately study the perishability of products and adjust its orders accordingly.” The collaboration represents a significant advancement in the retail sector, where challenges associated with the perishability of fresh produce have often hindered efficiency.
The benefits of the avocado scanner extend to various stakeholders in the produce supply chain. For consumers, the device delivers precise information regarding the ripeness of avocados, enhancing the purchasing experience by enabling informed choices. Retailers benefit from reduced product damage, as the scanner minimises the need for customers to handle fruit in-store, thereby helping to extend product shelf life and lower waste rates.
Additionally, OneThird’s technology offers growers and wholesalers non-destructive equipment to assess key parameters, such as dry matter and Brix levels. This capability aims to mitigate financial losses encountered due to quality tests and order rejections, which are common issues faced within the industry.
OneThird will be showcasing its avocado scanner at booth V28 during the Tech for Retail event, marking a significant step in the integration of technology to address fresh produce waste. This launch is expected to garner attention from retailers, consumers, and agricultural professionals attending the two-day exhibition in Paris.
