Tofurei, a plant-based café and tofu producer in Norwich, will close next month after seven years, but its founders plan to launch a new cake business shortly after.
Tofurei Announces Closure After Seven Years, Plans New Venture
Norwich, UK: Tofurei, a pioneering plant-based café and tofu production business, has announced it will be closing its doors next month. Co-founded by Steve Lepper and Jenny McCann in 2016, Tofurei originally operated from a small café in Pottergate, Norwich. By day, the café served cakes and coffee, while by night, it produced its own tofu to create unique offerings such as sandwiches, ‘soysages’, and burgers.
Expansion and National Recognition
Due to increasing demand, Tofurei moved its tofu production facilities to Lenwade and, in 2020, relocated the shop to St Gregory’s Alley. This location gained national attention when it was featured on the Hairy Bikers’ show “Go Local”.
Struggles and Closure
Despite experiencing the best years in terms of sales and innovation in the recent couple of years, the business has struggled with financial sustainability. In a heartfelt video, Ms McCann explained the challenges they faced.
“It’s always a battle to make ends meet at the end of the day despite everybody’s best efforts and if it was down to determination and enthusiasm alone, I definitely wouldn’t be making this video,” she stated. Rising costs have been a persistent issue, making it difficult for the business to stay afloat.
Farewell Celebrations
As a final gesture of gratitude to its loyal customers, Tofurei is holding a sale both in-store and online for its merchandise. Additionally, the café plans to host a farewell celebration, referred to as “good old knees up,” on its last day of operation, August 3rd.
Future Plans
Despite the closure, Ms McCann expressed her excitement for future endeavours. She revealed plans to start a new cake business by the end of the year. “We are hoping in the near future to set up a cake business because doing cakes has been an absolute joy,” she said, emphasising the importance of seeking joy in life.
Community Appreciation
Ms McCann also extended her heartfelt thanks to Tofurei’s customers for their unwavering support over the years. “Thank you to all our customers over the years, you have been absolutely fantastic and so loyal, we love you all dearly so thank you for all the joy you’ve brought us,” she added.
The closure of Tofurei marks the end of a significant chapter in Norwich’s vegan food scene but also heralds the beginning of new and hopeful ventures for its dedicated founders.
