Amy Lynn Cross from The Cross Legacy dispels the myth of storing avocados in water and shares safer methods to extend their shelf life.
Avocados, known for their creamy texture and health benefits, can be tricky to store. Amy Lynn Cross, from The Cross Legacy, debunks the myth popular on social media that storing avocados in water helps them stay fresh longer. Cross warns that this method can cause bacterial growth and spoil the fruit.
Instead, Cross suggests a safer method to extend the shelf-life of avocados. First, wash the avocados with a solution of cool water and 5% distilled white vinegar. Submerge the avocados in the solution for exactly two minutes, then rinse and dry them thoroughly. Completely dry avocados can be stored in a sealed container to prevent bacterial growth or mold. For further freshness, store ripe avocados in the fridge and keep them alongside lemons, but separate from apples and bananas to avoid quick ripening.
