It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren\u2019t there for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Trump also repeated criticism of NATO\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also criticised Britain\u2019s military capability and the leadership of Prime Minister\u00a0Keir Starmer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t even have a navy. You\u2019re too old and had aircraft carriers that didn\u2019t work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir defended the alliance and said NATO remained central to Western security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has kept us safe for many decades, and we are fully committed to NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s claim that Iran was seeking a ceasefire comes as disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has raised concerns about global energy supplies and prompted Western governments to consider options to restore safe passage through the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on Truth Social, President Trump warned allies unwilling to support United States operations: \u201cYou\u2019ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the USA. won\u2019t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren\u2019t there for us. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United States Secretary of State\u00a0Marco Rubio\u00a0also suggested Washington could reassess its relationship with NATO once the conflict with Iran ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s no doubt, unfortunately, after this conflict is concluded we are going to have to re-examine that relationship,\u201d he told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>Any attempt by a United States president to withdraw from NATO would face legal limits. A law passed by Congress in 2023 requires either a two-thirds majority in the Senate or an act of Congress before withdrawal can take place.<\/p>\n<p>Britain is expected to host talks with about 35 countries on restoring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz after the fighting ends.
