Iranian state media denied negotiations were under way and claimed Mr Trump had \u201cretreated\u201d from his deadline \u201cout of fear of Iran\u2019s response\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimatum set a Monday evening deadline to reopen the strategic waterway or face strikes on Iranian power infrastructure. Over the weekend, Tehran responded to Mr Trump\u2019s threat to \u201cobliterate\u201d its power plants with attacks on Israel and Gulf states, and warned it could target regional energy infrastructure and lay sea mines across the \u201centire Persian Gulf\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA)\u00a0says more than 3,200 people have been killed in Iran in 24 days of joint US\u2013Israeli strikes.  At least 214 of those killed were children.<\/p>\n<p>United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a parliamentary committee on Monday that London was aware of ongoing contacts between Washington and Tehran and welcomed the dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were aware that that was happening, and the immediate priority has to be a swift resolution of the conflict,\u201d Starmer said.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump said the United States and Iran were due to speak \u201ctoday\u201d and could meet in person soon if discussions progressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to get together today, by probably phone because it\u2019s very hard to find a country, it\u2019s very hard for them to get out, I guess,\u201d Mr. Trump told reporters at Palm Beach International Airport. \u201cBut we\u2019ll at some point very, very soon meet. We\u2019re doing a five-day period. We\u2019ll see how that goes. And if it goes well, we\u2019re going to end up with settling this. Otherwise, we\u2019ll just keep bombing our little hearts out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said US officials were already in contact with a senior Iranian figure, though not the country\u2019s supreme leader. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the pause in threatened strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure as a \u201cvery welcomed development\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump said Israel would likely support any agreement reached with Tehran following recent contacts with Israeli officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Israel will be very happy with what we have,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThis will be peace for Israel \u2013 long-term peace, guaranteed peace if this happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said Iran had initiated contact and showed willingness to negotiate, while stressing that any agreement must prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not going to have nuclear weapons anymore. They\u2019re agreeing to that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump added that if a deal were reached, the United States would assume control of Iran\u2019s enriched uranium stockpile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll go down and we\u2019ll take it ourselves,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also argued that recent United States military strikes had significantly set back Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we didn\u2019t hit them \u2026 they would have had a nuclear weapon within two weeks to a month,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The president also signalled openness to allowing Iranian oil already at sea to enter global markets to stabilise supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to have as much oil in the system as possible,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny small amount of money that Iran gets is not going to have any difference in this war,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump said Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran\u2019s supreme leader, was \u201cunavailable\u201d, adding that his status remained unclear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhamenei\u2019s son is unavailable. Nobody knows what happened to him,\u201d Trump said. \u201cSomething is going on with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He suggested several senior Iranian leadership figures had been removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s automatically a regime change,\u201d he said, adding that the United States was in contact with individuals he described as \u201creasonable\u201d and \u201crespected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump said negotiations remained under way and expressed cautious optimism about their outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a very serious chance of making a deal,\u201d he said. \u201cI think if I were a betting man, I\u2019d bet for it.
