Calum MacRae, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiologist and professor at Harvard Medical School who is serving as the principal investigator for the study, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of how technology can improve our understanding of human health.” He added that the study aims to explore connections across various health domains, using technology that is readily accessible to many individuals.
The Apple Health Study intends to utilise data from several Apple devices, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, to unravel complex relationships between different aspects of health. Among the innovative areas the research will cover are the impact of mental health on heart rate patterns and how sleep quality can affect exercise performance. The initiative is open to any U.S. resident who meets the age requirements and consents to participate, making it highly inclusive.
This new study expands on Apple’s previous health research efforts, such as the Apple Women’s Health Study, Apple Hearing Study, and Apple Heart and Movement Study. Collectively, these initiatives have involved over 350,000 participants across the United States, underscoring Apple’s capabilities in conducting large-scale health studies using its technology.
