Tinnitus, a symptom of various health issues, affects a significant portion of the population and requires timely medical attention, according to expert Alexander Gershevsky.
Tinnitus, commonly understood as a condition characterised by a ringing, buzzing, hissing, or humming sound in the ears, has been highlighted as a significant health issue by Alexander Gershevsky, a specialist in otolaryngology from the European Medical Centre (EMC). In a recent discussion with Izvestiya, Gershevsky noted that tinnitus is not a standalone disease, but rather a symptom indicating various health disruptions.
Research suggests that tinnitus affects approximately 10–15% of the population, and for some individuals, it can severely diminish their quality of life. “Tinnitus is a signal from the body about potential issues,” Gershevsky remarked, emphasizing the importance of not ignoring this symptom.
There are numerous causes associated with tinnitus. Among the more common origins are ear conditions such as earwax blockage, which can distort sounds; otitis, an inflammatory disease affecting the middle or outer ear; and dysfunction of the Eustachian tube. Tinnitus may also arise from acoustic trauma caused by exposure to loud noises or sensorineural hearing loss, which is commonly experienced alongside auditory disturbances.
Additionally, tinnitus can be symptomatic of vascular and neurological issues. Conditions such as high blood pressure, neuroses, stress, and depression have all been linked to this auditory phenomenon. Other contributing factors include the effects of ototoxic medications, hormonal changes, and vitamin deficiencies.
Gershevsky stressed the need for medical attention if tinnitus persists for several days or intensifies, particularly if accompanied by dizziness, hearing impairment, or headaches. Further, if the tinnitus is pulsating in sync with the heartbeat or results in sleep disturbances, anxiety, and irritability, it is crucial to seek a professional evaluation.
The specialist highlighted that tinnitus serves as an alert from the body regarding possible health complications. “Timely diagnosis will help identify the cause and facilitate suitable treatment, while a healthy lifestyle may reduce the likelihood of recurrent tinnitus,” she stated.
Overall, the report underscores that while tinnitus is prevalent among many, the implications extend beyond mere discomfort, as it could be indicative of more severe underlying health issues. Early intervention and management strategies are key in addressing not only the symptoms of tinnitus but also any associated conditions, thereby enhancing overall wellbeing.
