Golf Digest’s ongoing “Lucky Break” series highlights the stories of successful golf businesses, including Bluetross, a boutique custom-headcover maker that found success after being featured in Golf Digest. Bluetross was started by Marc Hanson, a Navy veteran who discovered his passion for leathercraft during the pandemic. What started as a hobby making headcovers for his brother turned into a business that allowed Hanson to quit his job in February. Bluetross’ headcovers are made from premium Italian and Horween leather, designed to develop a patina over time and last longer than the clubs they protect.
While the price tag for Bluetross headcovers may seem high, Hanson believes in the quality of his products. He uses vegetable-tanned leather, which can be buffed and polished to maintain or even improve its appearance over time. The craftsmanship of Bluetross headcovers is evident in the details, such as handmade patches, contrasting leather stripes, color-coordinated lining, and laser engraving. Hanson wants his products to be used and worn in, as they only get better with age.
Aside from individual sales on the Bluetross website, Hanson also accepts commissions where customers can customize their headcovers based on preferred color schemes. The process involves creating a mockup, getting approval from the customer, and then handcrafting the cover with patches, stripes, and a color-coordinated lining. Each cover takes between 1-1.5 hours to make, depending on complexity. As a one-man operation, Hanson has a limit on the number of headcovers he can produce in a week.
In addition to managing orders, Hanson must carefully oversee his leather inventory, as each piece can cost upwards of $300. Bluetross offers three varieties of leather, each with different characteristics, which allow Hanson to create a range of products, including bags and accessories. His background in logistics from the Navy has helped him navigate the complexities of supply chain management to fulfill custom orders and maintain quality.
Hanson’s long-term goal is to expand his business to employ local artisans and cater to larger clients like destination resorts while preserving the handmade quality of his products. His journey from Navy veteran to successful entrepreneur is a testament to his dedication to craftsmanship and quality. Bluetross headcovers not only protect golf clubs but also represent a blend of artistry and functionality that appeals to golfers who appreciate fine craftsmanship. As Bluetross continues to grow, Hanson remains committed to delivering high-quality, handmade products that stand the test of time.
