Fairway woods have always been a challenging club for many golfers to elevate due to their longer length and lower loft. However, at the annual Hot List Summit, players have identified certain fairway woods that tilt towards the high end of the ball flight spectrum, raising both trajectory and player confidence. This year, players across different handicap groups – Low, Mid, and High – participated in a survey to identify fairway woods that are perceived to launch higher.

One of the key factors that contribute to the perception of a fairway wood launching higher is the center of gravity. Fairway woods with a lower center of gravity, achieved by combining heavier elements in the sole with lighter elements in the crown, are more likely to launch the ball higher. Additionally, a lower face height provides players with confidence that they can get under the ball to achieve a higher launch. Some players may also benefit from a more flexible stock shaft that helps in launching the ball higher.

At the core of the “highest flying” fairway woods is the ease of use. Our panel of players identified fairway woods that were slightly lighter, such as the Titleist TSR1, and those with weaker lofts, like the Ping G430 SFT, as producing higher flight. Fairway woods with slightly higher lofts, such as a 15.5- or 16-degree 3-wood, are easier to launch compared to those with lower lofts. Many of these higher-launching fairway woods also feature larger, more forgiving heads and shallower faces, enhancing player success.

Let’s take a closer look at the highest-flying fairway woods as identified by our players, categorized by handicap division. In the Low handicap group, certain fairway woods stood out for their ability to launch the ball higher, contributing to improved performance for skilled players. For Mid handicap players, fairway woods that offered a higher launch angle were a determining factor in enhancing playability and confidence on the course. In the High handicap group, fairway woods that promoted a higher ball flight were instrumental in increasing distance and consistency for less experienced players.

In conclusion, fairway woods that provide a higher launch angle are essential for golfers looking to improve their game and gain confidence with their long-distance shots. By incorporating features like a lower center of gravity, lower face height, and more flexible shafts, players can achieve a higher trajectory with their fairway woods. The ease of use and forgiveness offered by higher-launching fairway woods make them a valuable addition to any golfer’s bag, regardless of their skill level. By selecting the right fairway wood that promotes a higher ball flight, players can enhance their performance and enjoy greater success on the course.
