The 2024 Formula 1 season has seen a shift in the landscape of competition, with Ferrari and McLaren emerging as serious threats to Red Bull’s dominance. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner acknowledged that both rival teams have the potential to dethrone Red Bull, with more than half of the season’s races still to come. Horner highlighted areas where the Red Bull car is weaker than its competitors, emphasizing the need to improve in certain aspects such as hitting and riding curbs.
Horner reflected on the phenomenal success of Red Bull in 2023, winning 21 out of 22 races, acknowledging that such a “unicorn” year may never be replicated. With fresh competition at the front of the pack, Horner expressed the unpredictability of each race weekend, noting the recent victories of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Despite the increased challenge from Ferrari and McLaren, Horner sees the closer competition at the front of the grid as beneficial for the sport, creating excitement for impartial fans.
While Red Bull faced criticism for retaining Sergio Perez as a driver, Horner defended the decision by pointing out Perez’s significant contributions to the team. Perez, along with Max Verstappen, formed the most successful pairing in Red Bull Racing’s history, winning two constructors championships and achieving second place in the world championship last year. Horner explained that extending Perez’s contract was a natural choice given his track record and positive impact on the team.
Looking ahead, Horner discussed the contracts of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo within Red Bull’s lineup. Tsunoda’s contract has been extended, leaving one seat remaining in the team. Horner revealed that it is uncertain whether Ricciardo’s contract will be extended or if reserve driver Liam Lawson may secure the remaining seat. Despite the changes in the driver lineup, Horner expressed confidence in the team’s future, even after the departure of legendary car designer Adrian Newey. He emphasized that Newey had left Red Bull in a strong position, and the team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead in the competition.
