President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are gearing up for the 2024 election, and health care is a key issue on the campaign trail. Former President Trump recently acknowledged that the price of insulin is lower under President Biden’s administration, but he wants voters to credit his own administration for the lower prices. Trump claims that he was responsible for getting low insulin pricing for millions of Americans, not Biden. However, Biden has been leading Trump on health care issues, with an 11-point lead in ensuring access to affordable health insurance in a recent survey from KFF.
Despite Trump’s efforts to take credit for the lower insulin prices, Biden has been utilizing this as evidence of his success in lowering consumer costs. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden has implemented provisions to reduce the price of medicine for seniors, including capping the price of insulin at $35 per month for Medicare recipients. Biden is also pushing for a universal insulin cap to cover younger people as well. In contrast, Trump signed an executive order in the last year of his administration to issue his own $35 price cap on insulin, which Biden later paused when he took office.
The difference in approach to health care between the two candidates has had an impact on voter opinions. A CNBC All-America Economic survey from December showed Biden ahead of Trump by 19 points on health care issues. Trump spent much of his presidential term trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act without offering an alternative option. The ACA currently provides roughly 45 million Americans with health insurance.
As the 2024 election approaches, both Biden and Trump are focused on addressing health care issues to gain support from voters. Biden’s efforts to lower insulin prices and improve access to affordable health insurance have resonated with many Americans, while Trump continues to promise a replacement for the ACA without providing specifics. The health care policies of both candidates will likely play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the upcoming election.
