The integration of scent into virtual reality (VR) experiences was showcased by metaverse-focused companies at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, the metaverse could potentially generate $5 trillion in value by 2030, but it will require a more developed human aspect to deliver positive user experiences. One of the catalysts for this success could be the incorporation of the sense of smell and touch into VR experiences, as demonstrated at CES.
OVR Technology, a company showcased at CES, displayed a VR headset with a container for eight different aromas that can be mixed to create various scents. The headset is set to be released later in 2023, following an earlier version used for fragrance marketing. Users can smell different environments, such as marshmallow roasting or a bed of roses, enhancing their immersive experiences in the virtual world.
Aaron Wisniewski, the CEO of OVR Technology, believes that extended reality will soon be integrated into various aspects of life such as commerce, entertainment, social connections, education, and well-being. He emphasized the power that scent adds to these experiences, making them more engaging and memorable for users. FireFlare Games also plans to incorporate immersive sensations like touch into their VR dating app once the technology becomes more accessible in the market.
While some consumers may not be overly enthusiastic about the new development, tech consultant Ozan Ozaskinli noted that haptic technology, which simulates touch sensations, has the potential to enhance online interactions. Although the current technology may not fully replicate reality, it can still provide users with a sense of feeling, making online meetings more engaging and immersive.
In related news, industry experts are exploring solutions for NFT image-hosting disasters, as blockchain technology and the metaverse continue to gain popularity. At the CES event in 2022, various crypto executives, including those from FTX and Celsius Network, showcased their blockchain and metaverse developments. Brands like Samsung also announced their NFT platform, highlighting the growing interest in blockchain and virtual reality technologies. The future of the metaverse seems promising, with innovations like scent integration and touch sensations adding a new layer of engagement and immersion to VR experiences.
