The 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas showcased the future of technology, with a focus on Web3 and the metaverse. Major players in the tech industry unveiled new products that suggest a shift towards virtual reality (VR) as the central component of the metaverse. Taiwanese company HTC introduced the Vive XR Elite mixed reality headset, positioning it as a gateway to the metaverse and Meta’s Quest Pro headset rival. Sony also presented its next-gen PlayStation VR headset, while Apple’s mixed reality headset leak hinted at a lighter and more maneuverable product coming soon.
In addition to the product launches from tech giants, CES also featured innovative and eccentric products. OVR Technology drew attention with its initiative to bring taste and smell to the metaverse, aiming to enhance entertainment experiences. Flare revealed plans for an app that will incorporate sensations like touch for a VR dating world, while Shiftall introduced Mutalk, a device that enhances privacy in virtual conversations. These unique products offer a glimpse into the possibilities of immersive technologies and their potential impact on consumer experiences.
BMW’s i Vision Dee concept car stood out with its color-changing exterior made from an e-ink film, indicating a trend towards customizable skins in the physical world. This development hints at the prospect of digital artists creating NFTs for digital skins displayed on real-life objects, bridging the gap between virtual and physical experiences. South Korea’s LG Electronics showcased its integration of Web3 with television through the Blade Wallet service on LG Smart TVs, enabling users to buy, sell, and trade NFTs. The company’s partnership with Sansar offers access to a social VR platform with user-generated content, further blurring the lines between real and virtual worlds.
Mastercard also made strides in the NFT and digital art space by launching the Web3 Artist Accelerator program, in collaboration with Polygon, to train emerging artists in Web3 and blockchain skills. The program includes the release of the Mastercard Music Pass NFT, giving holders access to educational materials and events in both physical and virtual realms. These initiatives highlight the increasing convergence of art, technology, and commerce in the digital landscape, offering new opportunities for creators and consumers to engage with NFTs and immersive experiences.
