Maisy Dewey, a dual citizen of the U.S. and the U.K., always dreamed of living in London. Her parents lived between London and the U.S. before settling in New Jersey, where she grew up. In 2022, Maisy and her fiancé, Harrison Kent, decided to make the move to London after he was accepted into his dream master’s program at Kingston University Masters of Product & Furniture Design. The couple started preparations for their transatlantic move and sold almost all of their belongings to help fund their move.
However, finding the perfect home in London proved to be a challenge. After months of searching, they stumbled upon a moored houseboat that had just been renovated. Despite initial skepticism, Maisy and Harrison decided to give it a chance. The boat features a living room, two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a kitchen. They signed a two-year lease for roughly $2,200 per month and were the first people to live in the newly renovated houseboat.
Living on a boat comes with its unique responsibilities, such as refilling the water tank every few days. However, Maisy and Harrison enjoy the trade-off of having ample outdoor space and a sense of community among the other boat residents. Despite living in a house in Philadelphia before the move to London, Maisy feels that the houseboat is more spacious and safer than any other place she’s lived in before.
After six months aboard their houseboat, Maisy and Harrison have no plans of leaving anytime soon. They feel at home and enjoy the unique experience of living on the water. The couple appreciates the sense of community and camaraderie among their neighbors and believe that they will continue to enjoy their life on the houseboat for the foreseeable future.
