The Wall Street Journal is reshaping its senior leadership, adding two deputy editors in chief and a new coverage chief for business, finance and economics. The moves signal a push to modernise the newsroom and strengthen reporting across its desks.

In a staff note, editor in chief Emma Tucker said Aja Whitaker-Moore will join the Journal as deputy editor in chief, while current executive editor David Crow will be promoted to share the role. Tucker said the two will be “critical partners” in overseeing newsgathering.

Crow will take charge of news and story management across all coverage areas. Whitaker-Moore will oversee digital operations, talent development and the integration of AI across the newsroom.

Whitaker-Moore arrives from Axios, where she was editor in chief for its National, Local and Pro newsrooms. She joined Axios in 2020 as managing editor after senior roles at the Acuris Group and Debtwire.

Tucker said Crow, who joined the Journal two years ago, has been central to managing news, features and storytelling across platforms. His promotion expands his remit over key editorial decisions.

The Journal is also bringing in Dan Colarusso as coverage chief for Business, Finance and Economics. Colarusso was previously at CNBC, where he served as senior vice president of business news and oversaw television coverage and production for the Business Day schedule. He has also held editorial roles at Reuters, Bloomberg, Condé Nast and the New York Post.

The appointments come in the wake of the departures of Tucker’s former deputy Charles Forelle and finance chief Marie Beaudette. Whitaker-Moore and Colarusso will start on 15 December.
