  • Theo Bamber, from the Music Publishers’ Association, takes over as NMA chief executive
  • Industry faces critical issues over AI misinformation and economic sustainability
  • Bamber aims to strengthen trust and legislative gains in the UK news sector

The News Media Association has chosen Theo Bamber as its next chief executive, placing a policy specialist with experience in the creative industries at the helm of the UK’s newspaper trade body at a moment of intense pressure over AI, copyright and the economics of news.

Bamber is currently chief policy and public affairs officer at the Music Publishers’ Association. The NMA said he brings a strong background in agencies and in advising clients across the creative sector, and will take up the post on 18 May.

He replaces Owen Meredith, who is leaving after five years to become managing director for public policy at DMG Media in May 2026. DMG Media said Meredith will succeed Peter Wright, who is retiring after 47 years with the company.

During his time at the NMA, Meredith became one of the most prominent industry advocates on newsroom sustainability, government relations and the campaign against proposals that would have weakened copyright protections for publishers in the AI era.

Lord Black of Brentwood, who became NMA chairman on 1 January, said Bamber arrives as the industry faces a decisive period for frontline reporting and long-term commercial stability. He pointed to the growing challenge posed by AI-generated misinformation and the need for news brands to remain trusted sources of verified information.

Bamber said the UK news media sits at the centre of democratic life but is too often underappreciated. He said the association’s next phase should turn recent legislative gains into durable financial security for the sector, while defending the value created in newsrooms and the role of professional journalism in holding power to account.
