{"id":4305,"date":"2025-09-29T19:19:03","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T19:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sawahsolutions.com\/aging\/news\/green-mediterranean-diet-2-key-foods-may-help\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T19:19:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T19:19:04","slug":"green-mediterranean-diet-2-key-foods-may-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sawahsolutions.com\/aging\/news\/green-mediterranean-diet-2-key-foods-may-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Green-Mediterranean diet, 2 key foods may help"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<div data-testid=\"\" class=\"css-12va8w7\"><span \n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Mediterranean diet, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables, and fish, has gained popularity due to its links to good health. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Past studies show that following the Mediterranean diet may help improve our brain health by slowing brain aging and protecting against brain-related diseases like dementia. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A new study has found that an offshoot of the Mediterranean diet \u2014 called the green Mediterranean diet \u2014 may also help slow brain aging. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the last few years, the Mediterranean diet has gained in popularity due to its links to good health. <\/p>\n<p>Previous research has also shown that the Mediterranean diet may help decrease a person\u2019s risk for brain-related conditions like Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other forms of <hl-trusted-source source=\"Nature\" rationale=\"Highly respected journal,Expert written journal,Peer reviewed journal\">dementia<\/hl-trusted-source>. <\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"\" class=\"css-1avyp1d\"><span \n\n<p>For this study, researchers focused on the impact of following the green Mediterranean diet over the standard Mediterranean diet and a standard healthy diet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe foundation of the \u2018green\u2019 Mediterranean diet is very similar to the \u2018original dietary pattern with a focus on a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, fish, and olive oil,\u201d Monique Richard, MS, RDN, LDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist and owner of Nutrition-In-Sight \u2014 who was not involved in this study \u2014 told <em>Medical News Today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Richard said that some of the polyphenol-rich foods emphasized in the green-Mediterranean diet are green tea, Mankai (duckweed), and walnuts. <\/strong><\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"\" class=\"css-1avyp1d\"><span \n\n<p>To test their hypothesis, researchers analyzed health data from about 300 participants of the DIRECT PLUS trial, which studies the link between diet and the brain. Over an 18-month period, study participants were asked to consume one of three diets:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A standard healthy diet<\/li>\n<li>A traditional calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet<\/li>\n<li>A green-Mediterranean diet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the study, researchers measured 87 different proteins found in participants\u2019 blood serum, or the liquid part of the blood. <\/p>\n<p><h3>Specific blood proteins linked to aging<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Scientists found that two specific proteins, Galectin-9 (Gal-9) and <hl-trusted-source source=\"PubMed Central\" rationale=\"Highly respected database from the National Institutes of Health\">Decorin (DCN)<\/hl-trusted-source>, were correlated with accelerated brain aging. Galectin-9 plays an important role in the body\u2019s immune system, while decorin helps control inflammation, assists with wound healing, and has been shown to help inhibit tumor growth. <\/p>\n<p>At the study\u2019s conclusion, researchers discovered that participants following the green Mediterranean diet had decreased levels of these proteins compared to the other two study groups. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudying the circulating proteins in blood allows us to observe, in a real-life setting, how the brain\u2019s aging processes are influenced by lifestyle and dietary changes,\u201d Anat Meir, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Chan School and co-lead author of this study, says in a press release. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow css-34gtoi\">\n<p>\u201c[Studying proteins in blood] gives us a dynamic window into brain health, helping to reveal biological changes long before symptoms may appear. By mapping these protein signatures, we gain powerful new insight into how interventions, such as diet, may help preserve cognitive function as we age.\u201d<br \/>\u2014 Anat Meir, PhD<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-testid=\"\" class=\"css-1avyp1d\"><span \n\n<p><em>MNT<\/em> spoke with Jasdeep S. Hundal, PsyD, ABPP-CN, director of The Center for Memory &amp; Healthy Aging at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at Hackensack Meridian Health School of Medicine in New Jersey, about this study, who believes its findings are promising because they strengthen the link between diet and brain health. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile more long term, diverse research is needed, the findings align with the lifestyle strategies we already emphasize with patients, particularly adopting diets rich in plant-based proteins, polyphenols, and healthy fats,\u201d Hundal explained. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow css-34gtoi\">\n<p>\u201cWe do not have cures for Alzheimer\u2019s or most other neurodegenerative conditions, so lifestyle factors are a critical area of research. Diet is a modifiable risk factor and so something people can change and that may help delay or slow cognitive decline.\u201d <br \/>\u2014 Jasdeep S. Hundal, PsyD, ABPP-CN<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLarger, long-term studies across more diverse groups are needed to confirm these findings,\u201d he added. \u201cIt will also be important to examine how diet works in combination with other lifestyle factors like sleep, exercise, and stress management, since brain aging is influenced by many factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"\" class=\"css-1avyp1d\"><span \n\n<p>We asked Richard for her top tips on how to try the green Mediterranean diet for readers who may be interested. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember that you don\u2019t need perfect \u2014 a few green swaps can make a meaningful difference,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Richard suggested these easy ways to start the green-Mediterranean diet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Swap one meat entr\u00e9e a week for a bean- or lentil-based dish (think soup, tacos, stews, and chilies).<\/li>\n<li>Sip fresh-brewed green tea (3-4 cups) in place of sugary or artificially sweetened beverages.<\/li>\n<li>Add a handful of walnuts as a snack, or as a salad or fruit topper.<\/li>\n<li>Trade in chips, cookies, or crackers for sunflower seeds, hummus + cauliflower, or kale chips.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;margin:0px;padding:0px;\">If affordable and accessible, explore leafy greens or herbs beyond your usual favorites, <\/span>such as microgreens, Mankai, seaweed, or purslane. <\/li>\n<li>If Mankai or other greens are not available, try adding fresh, frozen, freeze-dried, or powdered nutritional green powerhouses (<span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;margin:0px;padding:0px;\">e.g., arugula, kale, mint, basil, spinach, and <\/span>broccoli sprouts) to smoothies, yogurt parfaits, or soups. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow css-34gtoi\">\n<p>\u201cWe have consistently seen that dietary patterns rich in plants, polyphenols, and healthy fats \u2014 similar to the Mediterranean dietary pattern \u2014 support brain health, and so much more. The \u2018green\u2019 Mediterranean approach, which emphasizes even more polyphenol-rich foods [o]ffers another exciting layer of evidence that food choices can influence brain aging and cognitive resilience. Feed your brain with color and plant compounds \u2014 your future self will thank you.\u201d<br \/>\u2014 Monique Richard, MS, RDN, LDN<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cHowever, we do need to keep in mind, pun intended, that these factors are only part of the multitude of variables that contribute to brain function, aging, and overall health,\u201d she continued. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, though promising, most human brain-aging data are still from relatively short trials and in specific populations.
